Today, many people have no idea who Anita Bryant is. The Miss America contestant turned professional singer and commercial spokesperson turned anti-gay celebrity activist was a firebrand to a controversy that raged in the 1980s, but for entire generation — maybe more — she’s unknown. Darren Star, creator of ‘Sex and the City’ will change that.
The upcoming HBO movie planned to tell the Anita Bryant story should be fascinating. ‘Sex and the City’s’ Darren Star will direct the Bryant biopic and Chad Hodge is writing the script.
HBO has a track record for doing this type of real life docudrama very well, including the classic ‘The Late Shift’ which depicted David Letterman’s exit from NBC and Jay Leno’s seizing ‘The Tonight Show.’ More recently, ‘Recount’ told the story of the 2000 presidential election when Florida was thrust into the limelight because of voting irregularities.
The Anita Bryant story provides great fodder for an HBO movie because while so many elements are pure Americana, there’s many outre points. The question will be how even handed Bryant is treated. How will her campaign against homosexuality be dramatized?
There’s no doubt she has had an interesting life, even if she’s been out of the public eye for many years. She was a popular singer and television presence, well known for her commercials endorsing Florida orange juice. She made famous the line, “A day without orange juice is like a day without sunshine.”
But all that changed when she left the mainstream to become a strictly Christian singer and celebrity. In 1977, she led a crusade to repeal a Miami-Dade County ordinance prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. She became a vocal spokesperson against homosexuality.
“As a mother, I know that homosexuals cannot biologically reproduce children; therefore, they must recruit our children,” she said. Her efforts successively struck down the ordinance and it took 20 years for it to be reinstated.
According to Hodge, “She is a fascinating person on every single level. The twists and turns of her life are incredible.” The writer has yet to consult with Anita about the movie, but he would like her input. That suggests he’d like to offer some perspective and, as he said, enact… “what drove her to do the things that she did.”
It’s still early in the project, but it would be interesting to speculate on who could play Anita Bryant. Here’s a few thoughts: Kyra Sedgwick, Julianna Margulies…and if they want a movie star, Sandra Bullock, Kate Beckinsale, Reese Witherspoon… Who do you think could play the former beauty queen?

In mid-October, spoilers about the Sex and the City movie sequel started to leak as shooting begun. It won’t spoil the fun if I confirm that the four ladies — Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kim Cattrall and Kristin Davis — are back and so are Chris Noth, Evan Handler and Jason Lewis.
Today, it’s time to open your first Christmas gift as the first Sex and the City 2 trailer has been released!
As you can see for yourself, the trailer doesn’t give us much info about the upcoming movie. Bummer, eh? It’s like getting half of a Christmas present… The rest of it will be given to us on May 28 in a movie theater!
One piece of info that I hadn’t read about yet is that the movie takes place two years after the first movie. The way-too-short trailer shows that the ladies will “get carried away, far away”. I guess this is confirmation that the ladies will travel to Morocco.
Another tidbit that was released in October and that is confirmed in the trailer is that Big and Carrie are together. Of course, there could be a few twists and turns in their relationship as nothing is ever perfect between the two.
As seen in the trailer, the ladies and their men seem to attend a big event. Could this be the much talked about wedding between Anthony and Stanford?

London: ‘Sex and the City’ star Kim Cattrall has once again shed her clothes to keep a classic Renaissance painting in the UK. Last year, the 53-year-old actress had bared all to recreate artist Titian’s Diana and Actaeon in a bid to raise awareness of the British National Gallery’s campaign to stop the artwork being sold off to a private foreign bidder.
And she successfully raised £50 million needed to buy the piece.
She’s stripping again to keep another Titian work in the country. She will pose naked for a new take on the painter’s Diana and Callisto canvas.
“Kim is committed to do whatever she can to keep the second Titian on public view,” the Daily Express quoted a rep for Cattrall as saying.
“Mother of God, she is wearing the same dress as Hannah Montana,” says Anthony (Mario Cantone) in the Sex and the City: The Movie sequel.
There’s been much chatter over whether Miley Cyrus had landed a cameo in the Sex and the City sequel, but now it’s official: She was caught silver-plated and ready for action on the NYC set last Friday!
Based on her short storyline, she’s not the only one silver-plated. Samantha has red carpet “Don’t” moment when she decides to wear something young and hot for the premiere of Heart of the Dessert, the newest flick starring hunky Smith (Jason Lewis), and finds herself wearing the same thing as 17-year-old teen queen Miley!
They’re both in a strapless, fitted disco ball gown, which is actually silver and gold from the looks of it.
Samantha has on a chunky topaz necklace, while Miley goes for a spiked choker and black full length gloves.
Word is Miley doesn’t have any lines in the cameo, but Anthony (Mario Cantone) gets to cry, “Mother of God. She is wearing the same dress as Hannah Montana!”
Ouch! As anyone can see from the pictures, Miley has nothing on steamy Samantha — portrayer Kim Cattrall is still just plain smokin’ hot!
But, the red carpet moment is sure to be an ego crusher for the one of our favorite fictional characters of all time.
The weekend shoot that’s getting so much attention was at the Ziegfeld Theater, and Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie Bradshaw) and Chris Noth (Mr. Big) were also on-hand.
The Sex and the City sequel is due out May 2010, and word is it will also offer cameos by Penelope Cruz, Liza Minnelli and Project Runway’s Tim Gunn.

Meanwhile Kim Cattrall, who donned a grey jacket and cream trousers with matching gladiator sandals, looked tired and emotional as she prepared to begin filming for the day.
The women were recently pictured filming an Eighties flashback scene for the upcoming film and Kim has said that they were thrilled to step back in time momentarily.
It was so much fun to relive the wild and crazy fashions of the ’80s. I absolutely loved the four different looks of all of us.
‘We were all so uniquely different that we all couldn’t stop admiring our different looks. There was lots of laughing, and it was a blast!’
While producers are doing their best to keep plot details for SATC 2 under wraps, some details are already starting to emerge.
It is widely reported that Carrie’s marriage to Mr Big, played by Chris Noth, will run into trouble.
The mogul is expected to suffer financial problems as a result of the economic crisis and is forced to move aboard.
‘Their marriage is going to face lots of challenges,’ an insider has revealed. ‘Big will be tempted by a younger colleague.’
High-flying PR executive Samantha is also expected to be hit by the effects of the recession.
‘The proposed story line for Samantha will be her having to downsize her big-spending life after some of her investments get wiped out,’ the insider reveals.
‘You will see her having to survive on a more modest budget but still staying true to her fabulous taste.’
She is also rumoured to face another cancer battle while Miranda is said to quit her job in law to open a restaurant.
And, according to reports, Charlotte suspects Harry of cheating causing her to move out of the apartment.
Sex and the City 2 is scheduled to be released May 2010.
Actress Miley Cyrus and Liza Minnelli are reportedly set to make special appearances in the movie sequel of Sex & The City. According to sources, producers of the film are still trying to strike a deal with Hannah Montana star.
“They’ve asked her, but she hasn’t confirmed. Right now, they’re just holding the space for her,” Contactmusic quoted an insider as saying.
However, Minelli is apparently ready to perform at a gay wedding in the film. The Grammy Legend Award winner is supposed to sing as part of the celebrations behind a gay union between characters Stanford Blatch and Anthony Marentino, played by Willie Garson and Mario Cantone. The source added: “The scene is hilarious.”

AMERICAN actress, Katie Holmes, is set to star in the next Sex and the City movie, said media reports on Monday.
The wife of Hollywood star, Tom Cruise, has reportedly been approached to take on the role of a feisty New York businesswoman who infuriates Kim Cattrall’s man-eating character Samantha Jones in the forthcoming sequel.
“The character they want her to play is a really ballsy, high-powered company executive who tangles with Samantha,” a source told entertainment website Bang Showbiz.
Movie bosses are currently working on the follow-up to the 2008 hit Sex and the City: The Movie – which was based on the long-running TV series about four female friends and their chaotic love lives.
Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker and her husband Matthew Broderick just welcomed twin daughters on Monday. The twins, Marion Loretta Elwell (5lbs.) and Tabitha Hodge (6 lbs.), were born at 3:58 pm in Ohio via a surrogate.
“The babies are doing beautifully,” Parker’s publicist said in a statement to TVGuide.com. “The entire family is over the moon.”
“Both Hodge and Elwell are family names on Parker’s side,” the statement added.
Parker and Broderick confirmed they were expecting twin daughters by a surrogate mother in April after they struggled to conceive naturally. Earlier this year, the said surrogate mother also became the target of media frenzy when two Ohio police officers allegedly burglarized the surrogate mother’s home so they could sell photos and other information to a tabloid.
“We didn’t expect it. I think after a certain amount of time, you tend to hold your hopes at bay a bit so as not to be disappointed,” the Sex and the City actress said back then. “One really would have been thrilling and we would’ve felt incredibly lucky. And two was a comedy!
Parker catapulted to fame as Carrie Bradshaw on the HBO television series Sex and the City, for which she won four Golden Globe Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Emmy Awards. She played the same role in the feature film version of the show, which was released on May 30, 2008. Broderick, on the other hand, became popular for his roles in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Godzilla and WarGames.
The couple married on May 19, 1997 and has a son, James Wilkie Broderick, born on October 28, 2002.
“James is really excited. He’s very much ready to be an older brother,” Parker said. “I think it gives him a great sense of pride. It’s wonderful and I just hope for their safe arrival.”
